We Help Reduce Stress

Land & Sea Together is building a network of services and opportunities to reduce stress for fisheries, forestry, and farming (FFF) enterprises, workers, and their families in Rhode Island.

Land & Sea Together is a USDA Grant funded program through RI-DEM and implemented by the Center for Mediation and Collaboration RI. About Our Program Director

Land & Sea Together is directed by Julia Bancroft, staff at the Center for Mediation and Collaboration, RI.

Julia joined the Land & Sea Together team in March. Prior to joining the team, she managed the Charlestown Land Trust farmers market for the last 5 years which sparked an interest in the local food systems in the state. Having the opportunity to connect with farmers, shellfishermen, and fishermen directly, she has seen how daily stressors can make an impact upon quality of life at home, at sea, in the fold or elsewhere on the job. Her focus is to share the many resources available to reduce stress in these industries and their families. She is continuing to foster, strengthen, and expand the partnerships of the program. One of her favorite endeavors included working as a farm hand on a local oyster farm, and now currently on a flower farm. Julia is leading the Peer Network training which is aimed to create a peer support network in the state for farmers, fishermen, and foresters. She studied Marine Affairs at the University of Rhode Island. Julia has completed basic Mediation training and in addition, she teaches Yin Yoga. In her free time enjoys walking her two rescue dogs, Roscoe and Bruno, and paddleboarding. Julia loves to connect with people, feel free to reach out anytime julia@cmcri.org.

About Our Succession Program Specialist

Our Farm Succession and Transition Planning work is led by Laurel Witri, staff at the Center for Mediation and Collaboration, RI.

Laurel studied Psychology at Northeastern University, and then proceeded to farm and work in agriculture for the next 10 years. Starting with an urban rooftop garden, becoming a farm apprentice, managing a farm, and ultimately running her own farm, she has experienced the highs and lows of farming. Working with Land & Sea Together brings her work journey full circle, back to mental health. As a way to cope with her own mental health struggles, Laurel turned to farming. Now, she hopes to bring farmers (as well as foresters and fisheries workers) tools to cope with the stresses and strains of these industries. Prior to CMCRI, Laurel launched a mobile food market in three cities and provided technical support for refugee and immigrant farmers in New Hampshire. Originally from the Ocean State, she is thrilled to be back home and to connect with the food and forest systems and the many people who keep them afloat. She welcomes your emails- laurel@cmcri.org any time! Laurel will be focusing her time on working with farmers plan for their future by walking them through the process of succession planning. Laurel is a certified farm transition coordinator through the International Farm Transition Network (IFTN).
